Day 1: Power & Grandeur

Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park & Elephant Rocks State Park

Morning – Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park (near Middle Brook, MO) Begin at one of Missouri’s most dramatic landscapes, where the East Fork of the Black River has sculpted ancient 1.4-billion-year-old igneous rock into swirling channels, polished potholes, cascading waterfalls, and mist-filled gorges.

We’ll practice long-exposure techniques to transform rushing water into silky veils, capture dynamic reflections, and explore dramatic light play. Beyond the technical, we’ll focus on emotional depth: how the energy of flowing water can mirror inner states—turbulence, release, power, or serene persistence.

Break for lunch

Afternoon – Elephant Rocks State Park Shift to a surreal granite wonderland featuring massive 1.5-billion-year-old pinkish boulders that resemble a herd of circus elephants frozen in time.

Hike the accessible Braille Trail, climb among the giants, and discover unique formations, abandoned quarry remnants, and abstract stone patterns. This location is ideal for mastering scale, texture, and perspective—creating images that convey timeless wonder, human insignificance, or playful abstraction amid nature’s raw grandeur.

Day 2: Intimacy & Renewal

Morning — Pink Rocks at Amidon Memorial Conservation Area (Castor River Shut-Ins)

Travel to the hidden gem known locally as “Pink Rocks” near Fredericktown, MO—one of Missouri’s best-kept secrets. Here, the Castor River has carved through rare pink granite, forming glowing rose-hued boulders, gentle cascades, crystal-clear pools, and intimate waterfalls within a narrow, tree-shaded canyon.

Break for Lunch

Afternoon - Private Property shut ins on the spring-fed cystal-clear Twelvemile Creek

This quieter, more serene private setting invites intimate and contemplative work: macro details on wet stone, soft water motion, ethereal light filtering through the canopy, and subtle color harmonies with long exposures.

We’ll emphasize emotional storytelling—using the gentle flow of water over vibrant granite to evoke themes of peace, renewal, quiet introspection, and subtle transformation.

The day includes extended shooting time, and personalized coaching.

Workshop Highlights

Spots and times are intention providing intimate, focused, and inspiring atmosphere.

Get ready to move beyond technical capture to making images that truly matter.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll walk away with a powerful set of images that reflect both the landscape and the human story within it—elevated, natural, and deeply authentic.

*These locations require sturdy hiking boots. It is a 30 minute trail hike to the top. Most people describe it as a quick hike with a bit of a push at the end—not exhausting, but enough to get your heart rate up. It’s very doable for beginners with basic fitness, and experienced hikers will find it relatively easy.

  • A steady uphill hike toward the top at Elephant Rocks

  • Some rocky, uneven terrain, especially near the summit (the “Devil’s Honeycomb”)

  • Elevation gain at Elephant Rocks can feel steeper in sections, especially in heat or with gear.

Suggested brings are a small backpack, hiking stick (if needed), hat, personal items, sunscreen and bug spray (if needed).  There are no restrooms at Pink Rocks Shut Ins—just bushes.
