This full-day immersive workshop takes you deep into the dramatic granite boulders, rushing water channels, and natural light of the Upper Shut-Ins at Sam A. Baker State Park. Working directly with professional models on location, you will learn to create powerful environmental portraits and artistic fine-art images that blend the human figure with one of Missouri’s most unique landscapes.
Thomas Smugala will personally guide every participant through technical, creative, and practical skills while you shoot in small rotating groups for maximum hands-on time. The workshop is designed for intermediate to advanced photographers who want real-world experience directing models in challenging natural terrain.

Sturdy hiking shoes (the trail to Upper Shut-Ins involves moderate hiking and rock scrambling)

This workshop is intentionally immersive — you will spend the majority of the day actively shooting with models in one of Missouri’s most photogenic locations. Expect a physically active, creatively rewarding day surrounded by water, granite, and golden Missouri light.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll walk away with a powerful set of images that reflect both the landscape and the human story within it—elevated, natural, and deeply authentic.
*This location requires sturdy hiking shoes and river shoes. It is a 30 minute trail hike. Most people describe it as a quick hike with a bit of a push at the end—not exhausting, but enough to get your heart rate up. It’s very doable for beginners with basic fitness, and experienced hikers will find it relatively easy.

Suggested brings are a small backpack, hiking stick (if needed), hat, personal items, sunscreen and bug spray (if needed). There are no restrooms at the shut Ins—just bushes. Swim wear or quick dry wear suggested.
