Creating an Editorial Story @ Hughes Mountian

$250.005 h

212 West Columbia St, Suite A, Farmington Mo 63640

Set against the rugged beauty of Hughes Mountain Natural Area near Caledonia, this creative photography workshop invites participants into a fully immersive, on-location editorial experience. Surrounded by granite glades, sweeping views, and natural textures, photographers will craft a visual story rooted in authentic portraiture.

This is a hands-on workshop designed for those who want to move beyond posed images and into storytelling led by experienced professional photograpgher thomas smugala.  You will witness him attack the editorial and see how he handles everyday people as his models. Using only available light, participants will learn how to read the environment, shape natural light, and enhance it subtly with bounce boards for soft, directional illumination. The focus is on creating relaxed, genuine connections with subjects—capturing expressions and moments that feel honest and unforced.

Throughout the session, you’ll explore composition, movement, and narrative flow, building a cohesive editorial series rather than standalone shots. Guidance is provided in real time, helping you refine your approach while staying emersed in the moment.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll walk away with a powerful set of images that reflect both the landscape and the human story within it—elevated, natural, and deeply authentic.

*This location requires sturdy hiking boots. It is a 30 minute trail hike to the top. Most people describe it as a quick hike with a bit of a push at the end—not exhausting, but enough to get your heart rate up. It’s very doable for beginners with basic fitness, and experienced hikers will find it relatively easy.  (roughly 1.5–2 miles round trip)

  • A steady uphill hike toward the top

  • Some rocky, uneven terrain, especially near the summit (the “Devil’s Honeycomb”)

  • Elevation gain: around 350–400 feet

  • Can feel steeper in sections, especially in heat or with gear
