Workshop Overview
Join Thomas Smugala for a full-day immersive photography experience exploring three of Missouri’s most stunning natural spring and waterfall locations. This workshop focuses on capturing the ethereal beauty of crystal-clear spring waters, vibrant blue hues, cascading waterfalls, and lush Ozark landscapes.
You will photograph at Alley Spring, Blue Spring, and Rocky Falls with guided instruction, creative challenges, and hands-on shooting time at each site. The day is designed for photographers who want to master natural light, long exposures, reflections, and intimate landscape details in dynamic water environments.
Morning Session – Alley Spring
Historic mill, vibrant spring pool, and surrounding Ozark scenery
Guided shoots focusing on:
Soft morning light on turquoise waters
Reflections and abstract water patterns
Incorporating the historic grist mill as a storytelling element
Individual coaching and composition critiques on location
11:30 AM – 12:45 PM
Midday Session – Blue Spring
Short drive to one of Missouri’s deepest and most intensely blue springs
Focus on:
Capturing the iconic electric-blue water under changing light
Underwater visibility and clarity techniques
Creative framing with overhanging trees and limestone bluffs
1:00 – 2:00 PM

Relaxed discussion and image sharing

Afternoon Session – Rocky Falls
Dramatic 80-foot waterfall and rocky gorge
Advanced techniques:
Long-exposure silky water effects
Dynamic composition with powerful cascades
Golden afternoon light on wet rocks and moss
Working in shaded canyons and finding unique angles
