Capturing Magic at Dusk and Night — all experience levels welcome.

As the sun dips below the rolling Ozark hills, the carnival will come alive with a symphony of twinkling lights and joyful chaos. At this creative photography workshop, held at Downtown Farmington during the annual fair, we will explore street photography under the enchanting transition from dusk to deep night. Participants will gather at 573 Magazine's studio with cameras in hand, ready to master the art of capturing candid moments bathed in vibrant neon glows and soft golden-hour remnants.

Led by experienced photographer Thomas Smugala, at dusk attendees will practice captuing lively scenes: families laughing on the Ferris wheel, children clutching cotton candy under strings of colorful bulbs, and couples sharing kisses in the flickering light of game stalls. As darkness settled, the workshop shifted focus to night techniques—long exposures for light trails from spinning rides, creative bokeh from fairy lights, and dramatic silhouettes against glowing food trucks.

The emphasize will be storytelling through light and shadow, teaching how to use slow shutters to paint motion and ISO adjustments to tame the carnival’s dynamic energy. Laughter mingled with camera clicks as participants roam the grounds, freezing fleeting expressions and the electric atmosphere of rural celebration. By night’s end, the workshop will hone technical skills but forge a deeper appreciation for the raw beauty found in everyday festivities illuminated by carnival magic while respecting privacy.

By the end of the evening, everyone leaves with a portfolio of stunning electric images, new technical skills, and a deeper appreciation for the artistry behind street photography.
